Everyone has a first day. And that first day you walk into a BJJ Australia club can be a life-changing experience. The first class can be the hardest – getting on the mat for a first grapple can make you react in any number of certain ways.

Beginners don’t know what to expect, some might find themselves frightened or anxious, and there are always one or two seemingly brimming with confidence. However, despite your initial reaction to the mat, after one day the class will likely change both your feelings and your opinion.

At BJJ Australia school you can watch a class, meet the teacher and ask some questions before ever getting on the mats. Before anything really happens, you’ll have signed a waver, and you’ll have plenty of time to meet the instructor and investigate the class – so make sure you pop in a little earlier than the other students.

Also bring anything you might need – not many have a gi prepared for their first class: board shorts, T-shirts and sweatpants all work fine.

There will be time to change and warm-up on the mats, and you can always ask the instructor if it’s alright to dress in uniform from a different martial art.

Keep in mind however, that wearing clothes with zippers, multiple pockets, fabric loops or loose fabric, can catch fingers and toes. You do not want to endanger someone else.

Once your class is over, there’s a chance you’re going to have many questions – also, if you’ve had a good time and wish to continue training – it’s a good idea to talk to the instructor and discuss your ideal schedule and pricing. You will need a BJJ gi for continued training. Most instructors sell gis, but you can also buy them at most martial arts stores and at many online stores.

Don’t force things. Your opportunities to socialize with your teammates will present themselves.

With the time you will find yourself spending greater and greater proportions of your days training, thinking about training, joking about training, and spending more time with people who enjoy training.

For the first few months, everything is going to seem difficult and frustrating. Then, one day, things start to click. BJJ is not one of those sports where we get better at in just a few months. It takes years of training.
